So, here’s the cool new thing that I’m starting which will be happening on adaptivelearnin every Friday, Five Minute Friday. What is Five Minute Friday? Check the link out for details from Lisa-Jo Baker on her blog. She’s the one who started it. Basically, tons of bloggers are doing Five Minute Friday every Friday. As Lisa quotes in her blog description it is “…a kind of writing flash mob.” I found the idea on my sister-in-law’s blog. As soon as I read the concept of Five Minute Friday, I knew it’s something adaptivelearnin needed to participate in.
Since adaptivelearnin is an education-focused blog, I’m going to approach Five Minute Friday posts from an educational standpoint.
Here’s the low-down:
I encourage you to start Five Minute Friday on your websites and with your students. You can have them do Five Minute Friday blog posts on their classroom blogs. If they don’t have blogs you can have them do the same concept typing in a Word document or handwriting on paper.
I’m promoting this in the education community because I believe Five Minute Friday is an awesome way to get students to write freely without worry for language, vocabulary, grammar, and other structural components that hinder the free-flow of brainstorming ideas for writing. Students (especially ESL) often have trouble brainstorming ideas in quick fashions, so I believe Five Minute Friday is a great way to teach them and to give them practice with free writing.
The purpose of Five Minute Friday is to, ” …just write without worrying if it’s just right…” as Lise-Jo Baker states on her blog. This could be used as a quick ice breaker or activity every Friday with students. And/or I challenge you to do Five Minute Friday on your websites to demonstrate to students how to write freely, and so that we (educators) can share stories and ideas with each other in the educational blogosphere community.
Every week Five Minute Friday has a new topic to do free writing on. The topic for this week is “What mama did”. I’m going to start my Five Minute Friday free writing below and apply it to “what mama did” to maker her mine for me in my schooling and education.
Here goes….
- read books to us
- nurtured us
- set examples of good study habits
- promoted college education
- taught us love for music
- taught us to care for other students
- involved in school meetings and promotions
- helped us with homework
- gave us incentives for getting A’s
- was proud of our education accomplishments
- made sacrifices for our education and future
- supported our needs and learning goals
- encouraged us to do our best
- loved us even when we failed
- set an example on how to persevere when it gets hard
- taught us to try no matter what
Done!
So…that’s how fast and simple Five Minute Friday is! Try it! Get involved! Promote it on your blogs and with your students!
